The Minister of Regional Integration of the Dominican Republic, Miguel Mejía, was removed from his position for traveling without permission to Venezuela to attend the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro, who assumes his new presidential mandate today.
Although the Dominican Republic has recognized Edmundo González as president, Mejía’s presence at Maduro’s event generated controversy, since it could be interpreted as support for the Venezuelan government.
Given the situation, President Luis Abinader decided to dismiss the minister immediately, as reported by journalist Nacho Montes de Oca through his social network X.
“The Minister of Regional Integration of the Dominican Republic (Miguel Mejía) traveled to Venezuela without permission to attend Maduro’s swearing-in. His presence could be exhibited as support for the Dominican government. President Luis Abinader immediately fired him.”
Mejía’s trip to this controversial event in Venezuela highlights the tensions within the Dominican government, especially considering that the Dominican Republic recognized the opposition leader as president of Venezuela.
