Colombia joins a global movement in defense of Venezuelan democracy, with mobilizations called in several cities in the country to support opposition leader Edmundo González as president-elect of Venezuela.
These demonstrations also seek to make visible support for key opposition figures, such as María Corina Machadoand press for a firmer international stance against the Nicolás Maduro regime.
The marches in Colombia will take place in Bogotá, Medellín, Cali, Cartagena and Cúcuta, among other cities. In the capital, protesters will gather in Plaza Lourdes starting at 10:00 am, while in Medellín the event will take place in the Parque de las Luces.
Similar activities are scheduled for afternoon hours in cities such as Cartagena, Santa Marta and Bucaramanga. According to César González, legal consultant for the Venezuelan NGO Plan País, the main objective is that Venezuelans living outside the country and their allies in Colombia Show your solidarity and raise your voice against injustices in Venezuela.
Globally, these protests are expected to spread to more than 150 countries, consolidating a call to the international community to support the majority vote of Venezuelans.
In the Colombian context, the NGO and other organizations have urged the government of President Gustavo Petro to adopt a more critical stance towards the Maduro regime.
Recently, more than 200 organizations submitted a letter to the government, requesting that the sending of a Colombian ambassador to acts that could be interpreted as recognition of the regime be reconsidered.
