Claro from América Móvil Mexicana, open to purchases in Brazil after agreement with Desktop

The telecommunications operator Claro, owned by the Mexican América Móvil, is open to new deals in Brazil following the recent acquisition of Internet Desktop provider.

“We are analyzing all the options that are presented to us,” Rodrigo Marques, general director of Claro in Brazil, told reporters in São Paulo on Thursday. “But we don’t buy just anything for the sake of buying. It has to be related to the needs of our customers.”

Claro announced last month an agreement to acquire a 73% stake in Desktop for an enterprise value of US$808.93 millionwith a base capital price of about US$484 million after deducting the Brazilian company’s net debt.

Marques pointed out that the operation still requires approval from the antitrust body Cadey from telecommunications regulator Anatel, which expects it to be granted by the end of the year.

The executive stated that the acquisition of Desktop is due to the company’s strong presence in the state of São Paulo, the most populated and economically important in Brazil, while pointing out that Claro is open to agreements throughout the country, since it operates at the national level.

América Móvil is controlled by the family of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim.
