The acquisition of a 25% participation in Virgin Australia by Qatar Airways Ltd. can continue to be subject to enforceable conditionsSaid the Australian treasurer Jim Chalmers, adding that the agreement would improve competition in the highly concentrated aviation sector of the country.
In a statement issued Thursday morning, Chalmers said the acquisition would increase Virgin Australia’s flight on key international routes, while providing a long -term route for the airline to operate its own long distance flights.
Qatar first announced its plans to acquire a participation in Virgin Australia de Bain Capital on October 1, 2024part of an agreement that would allow the Gulf airline to obtain greater access to the Australian market after the government denied more flights in 2023.
This is Australia’s last initiative to increase competition in the aviation sector, where Qantas Airways Ltd. dominates the market. Earlier this month, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that his administration would be willing to acquire the Rex national airline if he could not find a buyer.
