ATU announces diversion of 30 routes due to total closure of Universitaria Avenue in San Martín de Porres

The Urban Transportation Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU) reported that 30 public transport routes will modify their usual route in the district of San Martín de Porres, due to the Total closure of University Avenue for construction work on the new road corridor. The measure will come into effect from Tuesday, November 4, 2025 and will remain in place 24 hours a day while the works last.

As detailed by the entity, the restriction includes the section between the José Granda and Tomás Valle avenuesin both directions of circulation (north-south and south-north). The work is part of the project “Expansion of the urban mobility service on Universitaria Avenue, Metropolitan Avenue – José Granda Avenue section”, promoted by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML).

The objective of this work is to improve connectivity and reduce vehicle congestion in one of the busiest avenues in northern Lima, benefiting thousands of citizens who travel through it daily. San Martín de Porres, Los Olivos and Comas.

The ATU specified that of the 30 routes with temporary changes, 28 come from the Los Olivos district, so alternate routes have been defined to guarantee the continuity of public service and avoid the paralysis of urban transport.

In sense north–souththe buses will circulate through:

  • Tomás Valle Avenue
  • Av. Los Próceres
  • Av. José Grandaand then resume its usual route in the University Avenue.

In sense south–norththe units must follow the following route:

  • Av. José Granda
  • Av. Los Próceres
  • Tomás Valle Avenueuntil rejoining the University Avenue.

In addition, the ATU released a informative map which details the authorized detours, prepared in coordination with the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima and transport operators. Users are recommended to plan their trips in advance and pay attention to the signs installed on alternate routes.

The total closure of the section seeks to facilitate the widening works, pavement renewal and road reorganization of the new University Avenue corridor. The intervention includes the improvement of bus stops, the expansion of roads and the adaptation of spaces for the transit of large-capacity buses.

According to the ATU, the detours will not only affect public transport routes, but also private traffic, which is why the presence of troops in the areas of greatest congestion has been coordinated with the Peruvian National Police (PNP), especially during peak hours.

The institution recalled that these actions are part of the comprehensive urban mobility plan that seeks to organize transportation in Lima and Callao. Likewise, he urged drivers and users to respect traffic signs, follow alternate routes and allow longer travel times while the work lasts.

The road intervention in the Ate district once again captured public attention after the announcement by the Urban Transportation Authority for Lima and Callao (ATU), which reported on the temporary closure of a section of Nicolás Ayllón avenue. The restriction, in force since November 1, coincides with the beginning of the Central Highway widening workexecuted by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima. The notice generated various reactions among drivers and residents of the area, who use this main road daily to travel to different parts of the capital.

According to the ATU, the measure responds to the need to maintain order and security during construction work. The entity specified that the closure covers only a segment of the journey and that the vehicles have alternative routes to guarantee the continuity of traffic. Likewise, he highlighted that the provision seeks to prevent risks for passengers, transporters and operational personnel, due to the constant movement of heavy machinery in the intervened area.
