At least 17 people died this Tuesdayincluding ten members of the same family, due to the torrential rains that have fallen in the Congolese city of Kananga, capital of the Kasai Central province, in the south of the country and near the border with Angola.
The provincial governor, John Kabeya Shikayi, has warned, however, that this is a provisional death toll. He has also indicated that there are several destroyed infrastructures, according to the news portal Actualité. Shikayi has explained that the water treatment plant is floodeda road is cut off, several residential buildings are submerged and the city institute is “severely threatened.”
However, the governor has said that he is preparing to contact the central government through the Ministry of Humanitarian Action for urgent intervention. For its part, an NGO has raised the death toll to 19 people.
