Argentina officially announced this Wednesday the nomination of Ambassador Rafael Mariano Grossi, current Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA.to serve as Secretary-General of the United Nations for the period 2027–2031.
The decision was communicated by the Foreign Ministry, which highlighted the diplomatic career of the official and his international recognition in matters of nuclear security, multilateral dialogue and crisis management.
Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno publicly presented the candidacy through his social networks. “It is an honor and a privilege to present today the candidacy of Rafael Grossi for the position of Secretary General of the United Nations. Grossi is internationally recognized for the extraordinary task he has been carrying out as Director General of the IAEA for six years. which demonstrates his great leadership capacity in the face of serious situations that affect international peace and security,” he stated.
Quirno also maintained that the global scenario demands leadership, effectiveness and reforms that strengthen the multilateral system.
In its official statement, the Foreign Ministry stressed that Argentina, as a founding member of the UN, maintains a historic commitment to peace and international cooperation. He noted that Grossi has more than four decades of diplomatic service, and that his re-election as head of the IAEA in 2023 reflected his international prestige. “His deep knowledge of the multilateral system, his ability to promote dialogue, his technical solvency and his performance as an impartial interlocutor make him an excellent candidate,” he explained.
