He National Institute of Statistics (INE) detailed that the annual increase of 0.8 percentage points in the national unemployment rate during the May-July moving quarter was due to the fact that the growth of the labor force exceeded the capacity to generate employed people in the Chilean labor market.
In this period, the labor force registered a sustained increase due to the entry of more people looking for work, which caused the total number of unemployed to expand significantly in twelve months, with a predominant impact on the group of unemployed.
When disaggregated by sex, the unemployment rate for women continued to be above that of men, a structural difference that reflects lower participation and employment rates for women compared to men.
At the same time, the informal employment rate was around 27%, supported by people who work on their own or in micro-enterprises without social security contributions or contract formal.
At the regional level, the Metropolitan Region and several urban areas in the north and center of the country registered pressures on the labor market derived from the slowdown in key areas such as construction and commerce.
By branch of economic activity, the sectors that have historically mitigated or influenced the variation in employment during the winter months correspond to health services, education and public administration, while activities linked to transportation and agriculture experience variations associated to seasonal factors.
