César Acuña’s APP abandons the race in La Libertad and opens the door to its disappearance: “The party needs refoundation”

The political organization Alianza Para el Progreso (APP), led by the former presidential candidate Cesar Acunaannounced this Wednesday the withdrawal of its regional formula for the elections in La Libertad.

Through a statement from Martin Namaypolitical leader in the region, the party admitted that the results of the first round, held on April 12, reflected the feelings of the citizens. “Our party has evaluated the message of the population at the polls with what they really expect from political parties going forward,” he said.

The statement stated that this decision was made after an internal review and consultations with activists. “It has not been easy, but we consider that political organizations are fundamental bases of democracy in every country,” said Namay when explaining the position of the group, which had initially presented candidates for the region and its provinces.

In this way, APP withdraws its application to Regional Government of La Libertad in the elections on October 4, in which authorities will be elected for the period 2027-2030. According to the spokesperson, the position was adopted “after evaluating the respective situation in a familiar manner.”

Namay noted that the organization intends to begin a process of refoundation and restructuring to “recover citizen trust,” after Acuña’s candidacy finished in 13th place in the official scrutiny.

“We are conscious of agreeing that the party needs to go through a process of refoundation and party political restructuring that allows us to once again obtain the trust of the people,” he stated.

Despite the withdrawal of the regional candidacy, the spokesperson ratified support for the provincial and district formulas, to whom he guaranteed logistical and political support during the campaign. “With the trust of our political leader, César Acuña, after the elections, we are going to begin the work of reengineering Alianza Para el Progreso, working on the reconstruction and refoundation of our party,” he added.

According to the count of the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), in the first round APP reached 192,516 valid votes, equivalent to 1.51%, an insufficient figure to overcome the electoral hurdle.

In his reappearance before cameras, Acuña blamed the media for his electoral failure. “The biggest culprits are the media (…) that have tried to communicate things that have really hurt me a lot. It is the first time in the history of national politics that they have spread bad information against a presidential candidate,” he expressed, uncomfortable.

“The case of Acuña’s brother. The case of the manager, the Acuña official. The case of the Ministry of Health, the person responsible is Acuña. The contract of a person in Chiclayo, the person responsible is Acuña,” he said.

“The people said: what is happening with Acuña? Who are responsible? The media that have been responsible for misinforming the population, because I am not really corrupt,” he concluded.
