Barcelona, Apr 26 (EFE).- The president of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, has shown this Sunday his rejection of the criterion of ‘national priority’ agreed between PP and Vox in Aragon and has maintained that all citizens must be equal “in rights and duties.”
“There is no need to take any steps along this path,” the Catalan president warned in an institutional statement from Món Sant Benet, in Sant Fruitós del Bages (Barcelona), where the Government held a few work days this Sunday.
In his opinion, the PP and Vox pacts that introduce this criterion in the awarding of public benefits classify people into “first- and second-class citizens” with “discrimination” formulas.
“All equal in rights and duties, but also equal in rights in Catalonia. We must never allow this and we will never allow it. In Catalonia, all people deserve the same dignity,” he added.
Illa brought together the Government this weekend in Món Sant Benet at the IV Work Conference of the Catalan Executive outside the Palau de la Generalitat. The Government’s objective was to give a boost to government action in public services and the reform of the administration.
After these days, the Catalan president explained that he identifies five “underlying tensions” in the current political context.
“This very morning there was news,” he slipped, alluding to the attempted attack in the United States against President Donald Trump.
According to Illa, these tensions are the dilemma between “peace or war”, between “democracy or autocracy”, between the “politics of humanity or cruelty” and between “the welfare state or welfare for a few.”
Added to this is the challenge of “inequality”, said the Catalan president.
For Illa, the challenge that governments face is to translate these values into “transformative” public policies at the service of people.
And in that challenge he has framed the announcement of a shock plan to reduce the waiting lists of the dependency in Catalonia that will start with a budget of 25 million in 2026.
In her institutional statement before resuming the meetings with her ministers, Illa took the opportunity to highlight the economic indicators that show that Catalonia is going “in the right direction.”
Among others, he has claimed that one in every four jobs in Spain are created in Catalonia, where three out of every ten protective apartments built throughout the State are also located.
Furthermore, foreign investment has reached a record of one billion this year, 20% more than the previous year, and Catalonia is a leader in innovation in Spain and occupies 72nd place in the European ranking.
“Today Catalonia is doing better than a year ago, but in ten years Catalonia will be the best country in the world to live in,” he celebrated. EFE
