During curfew in March, Ecuador opened more than 1,170 criminal investigations

Between March 15 and 30, President Daniel Noboa decreed a curfew measure to combat the activities of organized crime groups in four provinces of the country. During the 16 days of this exceptional measure, the Prosecutor’s Office opened 1,179 investigations in the intervened jurisdictions.

The measure decreed by Noboa deployed thousands of police and military in the provinces of Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas. The first represented more than half of the investigations, with 624: Guayaquil alone 393 investigations were opened.

Then, In the province of Los Ríos, 256 tax files were reported. For its part, The province of El Oro accumulated 187 crime reports and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas had 103 investigations.

What were the predominant crimes?

Official data from the Prosecutor’s Office show that disobedience to the presidential order was the predominant infraction. The crime of non-compliance with legitimate decisions of the competent authority totaled 577 cases in the four provinces, 49% of open investigations.

Extortion was the second most frequent crimewith 254 investigation news in the four provinces, while drug trafficking generated 241 procedural investigations.
