A vegetarian couple is accused of letting their three-year-old daughter starve to death: she ate only yogurt, butter and lentils

A vegetarian couple faces serious charges after the death of their three-year-old daughter, who, according to the accusation presented at the Old Bailey court (London), they fed only three foods. The case has caused commotion in the English capital, where it is being investigated whether the diet provided by the parents was the direct cause of death of the girl, identified as Penelope.

The parents, Manpreet Jatana, 34, and Jaskiret Singh Uppal, 36, both of Indian origin, appeared in court charged with murder and other related crimes, according to information from Daily Mail. The minor’s body was found at her home in Hayes, west of London, on December 17, 2023, after the mother called a funeral home to notify the death. According to prosecutor Phillip McGhee, the couple deliberately starved their daughter, who was born in 2019 and lived in conditions of family and social isolation.

The medical experts who analyzed the case concluded that Penelope’s death was due to severe malnutrition and ketoacidosisa serious disorder that occurs when the body, due to lack of energy, begins to break down fats abnormally, generating toxic substances in the blood. This diagnosis was key to the charges brought against the parents, who have denied both murder and involuntary manslaughter due to gross neglect and child abuse.

Feeding the girl was limited to three products: butter, lentils and yogurt. This diet, although it may seem sufficient because it contains proteins and fats, is completely inadequate for a growing child. Young children require a variety of essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, complex carbohydrates, and different protein sources that cannot be obtained from these three foods alone.

The prosecutor in the case stressed in court that Penelope did not receive all the nutrients necessary for her development. Specialists point out that the combination of butter, lentils and yogurt does not cover a child’s caloric or micronutrient needs. The absence of fruits, various vegetables, whole grains and other sources of animal or vegetable proteins leaves the body without the basic elements to function correctly. The result was a rapid deterioration in health status of the girl and the multiple organ failure that ended her life.

The case is being heard at the Old Bailey court, one of the best-known courts in London. Manpreet Jatana and Jaskiret Singh Uppal appeared via video link from HMP Belmarsh and HMP Bronzefield prisons, where they remain on remand. Both denied charges of murder, manslaughter by ngross negligence, causing or allowing death of a minor and child abuse.

Prosecutor McGhee noted that at the time of Penelope’s death, neither parent was working and both were “essentially isolated not only from their extended family, but also from the outside world.” This situation of isolation could dhinder early detection of the problem by social services or other institutions.

The next case management hearing is scheduled for July 17, while the main trial will begin on January 11 next year and expected to last eight weeks before a Superior Court judge. The investigation is still ongoing and the legal outcome will depend on the evidence and testimonies presented during the process.
