The digital catalog of Our Mx Cinemathe platform promoted by the Mexican Institute of Cinematography (IMCINE), recently added a new production that focuses its gaze on one of the most emblematic figures of surrealism: Leonora Carrington. The premiere of the audiovisual biography “LEONORA” represents the arrival of a biopic dedicated to the British-Mexican surrealist painterwith a focus on his artistic and personal journey, under the direction of Lena Vurma, Thorsten Klein and the script Elena Poniatowska.
The film delves into the creative universe and life of Carrington, addressing key moments of his experience in England and his subsequent roots in Mexico during the second half of the 20th century. The cast is headed by Olivia Vinallwho plays the artist in her adulthood, accompanied by Cassandra Ciangherotti and Luis Gerardo Mendez in roles that seek to provide an international and plural perspective on the protagonist and her environment.
The story begins in Xilitlain 1946, when Leonora Carrington crosses the threshold of the surrealist garden built by Edward James. This space becomes the starting point for an introspective journey that takes the viewer from Carrington’s childhood in Europe to his consolidation as artist in Mexico. The narrative, based on the novel of the same name Poniatowskaillustrates the creative intensity and resilience of the painter, who challenged social conventions through her actions and her pictorial production.
