Minutes after former President Álvaro Uribe raised a possible alliance between presidential candidates Paloma Valencia and Abelardo de la Espriella to strengthen his position in the first round on May 31, 2026, President Gustavo Petro expressed his disagreement.
Through his X account, the head of state assured that the possibility raised by the natural leader of the Democratic Center would seek to “disappear” him for his work during the four years that he has remained in the Presidency.

The president even assured that Uribe would supposedly seek to slander him by linking his government with alleged alliances with drug trafficking and terrorism, in addition to accusing him of “looting” pensions.
“You ask for unity to eliminate a political position that has brought economic growth, more justice, a better standard of living, pensions for the elderly, more food for the home than in the entire century.including his government. The unity that you ask for is against me and slanders me (sic),” the President wrote.
Gustavo Petro’s objections come after Álvaro Uribe opened the door to an alliance between the Democratic Center candidate and the far-right independent candidate.
“They ask for Paloma-Abelardo unity. Our duty is total respect to build conditions. Many citizens who fear the continuity of Petro and Cepeda, which means consolidation of narco-terrorist power, ask for unitysuffocation of private entrepreneurship to nullify job creation and investment, destruction of health and imposition of inefficient and corrupt statism, looting of pension funds owned by workers, energy insecurity without alternative energies, no oil, no gas, no coal, no hydroelectric plants, etc.,” Uribe wrote.
For his part, the national president pointed out that the strategies of the leader of the Democratic Center would be motivated by hatred towards his political project and towards him, in addition to accusing him of alleged alliances with drug trafficking leaders to win the elections, including his possible disappearance.
“Reducing people’s hunger is not being a terrorist, Mr. Uribe. Calling the people to unity for life and progress does not make me a narco Mr. Uribe. “I have not been a defender of narco-paramilitarism, I have not used their money, I have no brothers imprisoned for murderous alliances with drug traffickers. You ask for unity to disappear those who have paid a fair salary to each soldier and police officer,” Petro wrote.
In his message, the president made a long list of reasons why, according to Petro, the Democratic Center would seek to end its political project that would now remain in the hands of Iván Cepeda if he became President.
“You ask for unity to eliminate the person who has seized the most cocaine in the history of Colombia and extradited the most drug lords to the US. You ask for unity against the president in whose government you have achieved a homicide rate that is half that of yours. You ask for unity to eliminate the president who has managed to reduce poverty to the lowest level of the century including his government, the lowest unemployment rate of the century, including his government, the highest industrial and agricultural production of the century, including his government (sic),” said Petro.
The national leader even assured that his government has managed to restore some benefits that, according to his X account, former President Uribe had withdrawn from the country’s workers.
“You call for unity to eliminate the president who has achieved a living wage for the Colombian worker and more job stability that you took away. “You want to eliminate the president who brings doctors and nurses to the homes of the poor and who has turned the community mother into a worthy employee of the state,” Petro said.
In his message, the head of state went so far as to assure that he has felt threatened by the expressions of former President Uribe, insinuating that he has been a victim of attacks on his life from which he has been saved “by a miracle.”
“You summon the unit to disappear me and I know what that means in your mouth. I have suffered their persecution and I have been saved by a miracle. You call for unity for a new era of terror on the people and their youth as you and Duque did in the past. Terror that 6,402 innocent young people die due to a directive from their government to its public forces, terror that 3,000 young people are imprisoned just for protesting against injustice in Duque’s government. That’s why I don’t let myself be fooled by your disguise, I know what you’re looking for, there is only hatred and political revenge for you. “I don’t hate, I don’t hurt my heart in that,” he said.
