Site problems

Bryan · Friday 30 March 2007 · 2:37 pm

As you may have noticed, I am having site problems. I have temporarily relocated the site to a new domain: ozpolitics.biz. In the fullness of time, I will have both the .biz and the .info address pointing to the same server.

My ozpolitics.info domain is registered with a provider whose software has a pathological tendency to set the domain name to inactive every time I move the physical location of the blog. Consequently, I spend the next seven days trying to get the domain name activated again. The people who are hosting ozpolitics.biz have agreed to take on the delegation for ozpolitics.info. I just have to persuade the other chaps to hand over something called an EPP key for ozpolitics.info.

Anyway, please accept my apologies for this.

In the next week or so, I will also recover the ozpolitics.info resource and load it into Wordpress. It will appear progressively here

Normal service has been resumed

Please accept my apologies for yesterday’s downtime. Hits to my site have been steadily increasing over recent weeks (visible at the bottom of this page). Yesterday it hit the wall with my service provider. To fix the problem, the site has been moved to another server.

Some of you may have experienced the PLESK default page and the following message when trying to access the site last night.

If you see this page it means:

1) hosting for this domain is not configured, or
2) there’s no such domain registered in Plesk.

This occurred because my site was given a new Internet address when it was moved to the new server. However, it takes around 24 hours for the mapping of ‘ozpolitics.info’ to the new address to be propagated across the entire Internet (actually I think the issue is that it takes around 24 hours for old cached name server lookups to expire). The Plesk message came from the old server. You got the Plesk message because your browser was looking for the site where it was on the old server, not where it is now on the new server.

Thank you everyone who emailed me to tell me the site was down.

Unfortunately, Alexa did not rank some sites that should have scored highly. Note: some of the following were ranked, but the rank was for multiple blogs from the one primary address.

Second is not too bad! But to be fair, most of the traffic coming here is not for my erudite posts. My visitors come for the politics test. The market place for serious analysis is much smaller than for cheap baubles. There are many better blogs than mine.

Some day I might repeat this exercise using Technorati.

Newish look and feel

Bryan · Sunday 11 March 2007 · 12:59 am

I thought I would have a go at simplifying the blog presentation. I have rewritten the presentational theme files from scratch. It looks good on my Linux set up, under each of the browsers I have thrown at it.

Unfortunately, if you are still using Windo$e (or at least an older version like my family), the right-hand sidebar does not look as intended. If you want to see what you are missing, click on this link. Update: I think I have found a fix for Internet Explorer version 6.

Comments and suggestions welcome.

I am trialing a new comments pre-view plugin. Please email me if there are problems.

Update: I am thinking of introducing daily comment limits to reduce the impact of the human spambots that visit here. I was thinking of a 24-hour limit in the order of 5 comments. Any thoughts?
